Pictured is Barclay’s bank employee Mair Bond, who with her sister, Ty Olwen Trustee and Unit Receptionist Delyth Gough and others, raised £513 at the Ty Olwen tea tent at Clyne Gardens on Sunday 27th May. Barclays Bank have agreed to match fund the total raised making it a very successful Sunday. Thankfully the sun was shining. The many volunteers who have helped during the month of May are to be congratulated for all their hard work in all weathers.

Mrs Margaret Bartlett attended a meeting of the Ladies Guild at St. Mary’s Church in Swansea recently to collect a cheque for £100. This further donation maintains the constant support the Guild has given to Ty Olwen since the original appeal to build the unit in 1979. They are one of the many organisations who continually hold Ty Olwen close to their hearts and we offer them all a huge thank you.

The 13 ladies, who are aged between 56 and 81, travel around South West Wales providing entertainment for free.
They accept donations and then present them to deserving charities.
This year it has been Ty Olwen, which has received £1,000 from the energetic group, which is named after its rehearsal venue, the Baywood Hall, in West Cross.
“We have given it to who we feel needs it the most.”
The 73-year-old, who lives in Morriston, said the group’s aim was to bring a smile to people’s faces who may not get to see many live performances.
“We started out to take live entertainment to people who could not get access to it, like people in nursing homes, residential homes and even senior citizens’ clubs,” she said.
“We don’t charge for anything and we don’t take any expenses.
“We make our own costumes and provide our own transport.
“We don’t charge but we say we are happy to receive a donation towards a given cause.
“Most of the homes donate funds to us.
“The show lasts around an hour.
“We perform anything from the 1920s to the 1960s, wartime sing- a-longs and the Charleston.
“We get so many offers so we have to make sure we spread out our visits.
“It is great fun.”

Caroline’s Birthday Gift to Ty Olwen
Caroline Minns recently celebrated her 50th birthday with a party at the Swansea Dockers Club on a theme of “My Musical Extravaganza”. She was joined by family, friends and members of various Amateur Operatic Societies in the area where she is an active member. Both of Caroline’s parents died at Ty Olwen, her dad 3 years ago and mum 18 years ago, and she felt she wanted to support Ty Olwen by asking family and friends to give a donation for Ty Olwen instead of receiving presents. Staff Nurse Adrian Harding and Health Care Worker Carole Berry took time out to receive the gift of £260 on behalf of Ty Olwen. Thank you to all who gave gifts.

A story about Ty Olwen

Helen Murray, Chairman Ty Olwen Trust
“Hey everyone and thank you for visiting my just giving page! 🙂
I am raising money for the Ty Olwen trust. As a few of you may know and most of you probably don’t: Ty Olwen is a Hospice at Morriston Hospital that provides palliative care for people with ‘life limiting illnesses.’ Including my Grampy who got Diagnosed with cancer of the liver on Friday the 13th January 2012. In the following 5 weeks spent at Singleton Hospital it was discovered that the cancer had spread significantly to other parts of his body and that there was no radiotherapy/ Chemotherapy or sadly, happy endings.
This is where Ty Olwen and their quite frankly amazing work comes in. After reviewing Colin’s case it was agreed that he could move from his ward in Singleton to The Ty Olwen Hospice at Morriston hospital. Here, Grampy had access directly by his bed to a lovely garden with a pond and small wildlife, and I have many fond memories of him sitting in his wheelchair cracking jokes and smiling even under the circumstances. Ty Olwen on top of providing first class care and support to not only the patients and families also made it feel homely to everyone. Grampy would often have a whisky and even the odd cigarette out in the garden in the sunshine and its tiny things like that that seemed to make the most difference. Not to mention his own TV and a day room with internet facilities, a large flat screen TV which he loved to watch the sport on, Jigsaws, collection of books/ music/ films and even accommodation for the families and relatives if they wished to stay overnight. Sadly my grampy passed away at 0130am on Easter Sunday (8th April 2012) but thanks to Ty Olwen he lived the last 6 weeks of his life in comfort with his family around him.
This wonderful facility is PARTLY funded by the NHS for the bog standard day to day running of the place. To provide all the amazing services it actually carries out day to day Ty Olwen needs £400,000 a year!!!
Obviously I’m not expecting to raise that much by running one of the hardest half marathons in the country with ascents and descents of over 2000ft! over a twisting and turning 13 miles, However I would be very happy with anything I can get to this charity, which I really really can’t praise highly enough.
From me, that is enough reading for you all I think, and I better get myself to the Gym!
Many Thanks!!
Chris Hardwicke”
Clyne in Bloom 2012

Margaret Cain serving the first cups of tea at this years 'Clyne in Bloom' with volunteers and Dr Peter Griffiths looking on.
Hopefully the weather will brighten and get warmer for May as ‘Clyne in Bloom’ begins yet again. We are lucky to have the tea tent again this year so please make an effort to visit the tent during the month and enjoy the blooms and a nice cup of tea!
In Memory of Christine Bendle
Sadly Christine died at Ty Olwen in January this year, but on Sunday 29th April, despite an atrocious weather forecast her husband Paul and daughters Emma and Amy joined with friends and colleagues of Boots in the Quadrant to go on a sponsored walk to Mumbles to raise money in her memory. Dressed as monkeys (and a few bananas!) they hoped to raise at least £500 which Boots would match and more if possible.
