Skewen & District Industrial Heritage Society Donation
On Wednesday the 8th January 2014, Mr Vivian Griffiths Honorary Secretary of Skewen & District Industrial Heritage Association presented a cheque for £1,000 to Mrs Margaret Bartlett, President of the Ty-Olwen Trust. The money was raised by the making of a community DVD called ‘Looking Back’ Neath Abbey and Skewen. A similar donation was also raised in March 2013 with a DVD titled `Churches & Chapels of Neath Abbey and Skewen. With the generous support of the residents of the villages they will hopefully do another community DVD later this year. Both DVD’s can still purchased by sending a cheque for £11 for each DVD to

New Year’s Eve 2012, eight very good friends (four couples) and a glass or two of wine (or more) led to the decision to do a challenge in the forthcoming year and in October 2013 these good friends did a four day trek to Mount Toubkal, Morocco, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains. The 4th day was very tough, the final climb to the top, a long day starting at 5-30am and finishing at 7-20pm with just 15 minutes rest at the top and 30 minutes for lunch at the base. Thank you to Sheila and Mike Williams, Dr Chris and Lisa Johns, Phil Foot, Tracy Pollock and Rhys and Hayley Harris for undertaking such an enormous venture and to Sheila’s customers at Espirit in Sketty who generously donated £425 to Ty Olwen. Beauty Boosts Charity Funds
Charitable funds are set to receive a beauty boost this Christmas following the efforts of the NVQ Level 3 Hair & Beauty students from Neath Port Talbot College Group. Each year the Hair & Beauty department, based at the Colleges’s Afan Campus, hold a “Beauty Therapist Challenge” which is aimed at developing the students’ enterprise skills. The students are tasked with setting up their own beauty businesses including branding, product development, marketing and sales. Ty Olwen was chosen as one of the Chaities to benefit from the venture.
The challenge took place over four weeks with the students selling products and offering treatments at various venues across the authority. The students also visited Ty Olwen and local nursing homes to offer the patients and residents some pampering. Raffles and donations were also organised resulting in £1,237 being raised.
Juliana Thomas, Deputy Head of Hairdressing and Applied Therapies, explains: “Each year we set this challenge for our students and each year we are overwhelmed by how hard they work to raise as much money as they can for their chosen charities. The students gain hands-on experience at running thier own business and all the hard work and planning that entails, but the biggest benefits they get are life skills. Through visiting places such as Ty Olwen and working with the patients the students develop skills that would be difficult to teach in the classroom.”
Pictured are Juliana Thomas and Claire Richardson from Neath Port Talbot College Group’s Hair and Beauty Department presenting a cheque to Ty Olwen’s President, Mrs. Margaret Bartlett.
Thanking the students for their efforts, Mrs. Bartlett said, ” Without this kind of fundraising Ty Olwen would not be able to deliver the services that the patients and their families greatly rely on. It was a pleasure to have the students from the Neath Port Talbot College Group visit the Unit and we are extremely grateful to them for all their hard work in raising such a magnificent sum.”

Tattoo…………….ooh that looks sore!
A Penllegaer man will never forget the kindness and care lavished upon his uncle in the final weeks of his life by Ty Olwen staff. And he and his cousin have had a permanent inking as a lifelong reminder.
On Saturday Scott Brown and Haydn Jones added the Ty Olwen logo and the mantra “Ty Olwen care is always there” to their collection of tribal and religious tattoos.
The sponsored tattoo, under the needle of Reaperz Ink Studio in Gorseinon, has already raised £500 for the specialist Swansea hospice, and the lads have pencilled in another fundraiser, on January 18, at Penllergaer Sports and Social Club too. Scott says having seen the love lavished upon his father Vic Brown during his cancer battle, it was the least he could do.
“I was blown away by the care the staff gave my dad, and to everyone in Ty Olwen.
