Miss Leona Cunningham, daughter of Glesni Haf Cunningham, who died earlier this year, visited the unit to present £3000 to Ty Olwen. This represented a £2000 bequest from her mother and £1000 raised by family and friends from various events, including a sponsored bicycle ride, in her mother’s memory. Leona, accompanied by her grandmother and aunts, presented the cheques to Mrs Margaret Bartlett who received them on behalf of Ty Olwen. Everyone associated with the Ty Olwen service is most grateful for Mrs Cunningham making the bequest and her family and friends for their efforts in fundraising.

On Sunday 2nd October nearly 250 people gathered at St. Mary’s Church in Swansea for a Service of Thanksgiving for 30 years of Ty Olwen. The theme of the service was:

The congregation were joined by the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Byron Lewis, High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, Susan Waller Thomas and Lord Mayor of Swansea, Ioan Richard.
The service was led by Fr. Simon Griffiths, Rector of St. Mary’s and the address was given by the Rt. Rev. John Davies, Bishop of Swansea & Brecon who also led the act of re-dedication. During a moving act of remembrance, led by the Rev. Nigel Griffin, names of loved ones who had been under the care of Ty Olwen and those who had contributed in so many ways over the last 30 years were brought through the nave of the church whilst the choir of St. Mary’s sang the anthem, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is set on thee”. Four candles of Grief, Memory, Hope and Community were lit in turn by Canon Douglas Davies the first chaplain, Mrs Margaret Bartlett President of the Ty Olwen Trust, Mrs Gwen Bond the first Nursing Officer, and Mr Byron Lewis Lord Lieutenant.
Donation in memory of Anne Padfield who died in March 2011.
On 26th September, Anne’s husband, Robin completed the Swansea 10k run in 1hr 11mins and son Daniel the 3k run in 13min 52secs and together raised £750 for Ty Olwen. They were supported and encouraged by daughter Ellie and their “Chief Mascot” was son Ashton. Daniel presented the cheque on behalf of the family to Helen Murray at Olchfa School where he and Ellie are pupils. Ashton, a pupil of Sketty Primary School, said that he was very proud of his dad and brother and that he and Ellie hoped to race next year. Thank you!
