James Davies Does Iron Man Wales

James Davies writes-
I am taking on what some people say is the toughest Ironman course in the world to pay tribute to a courageous friend Michelle Mayne-Thomas, who sadly passed away on the 9th August 2012 at the young age of 40. Michelle’s positive attitude was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, she was so brave and kept smiling throughout her illness.

Michelle and her family received wonderful care and support from Ty Olwen and it is at Karl’s request that all proceeds raised are given to this charity trust

Tough Challenge for Chris

Chris tells his story-

I am raising money for the Ty Olwen Trust. As a few of you may know and most of you probably don’t: Ty Olwen is a Hospice at Morriston Hospital that provides palliative care for people with ‘life limiting illnesses.’ Including my Grampy who got Diagnosed with cancer of the liver on Friday the 13th January 2012. In the following 5 weeks spent at Singleton Hospital it was discovered that the cancer had spread significantly to other parts of his body and that there was no radiotherapy/ Chemotherapy or sadly, happy endings.

This is where Ty Olwen and their quite frankly amazing work comes in. After reviewing Colin’s case it was agreed that he could move from his ward in Singleton to The Ty Olwen Hospice at Morriston hospital. Here, Grampy had access directly by his bed to a lovely garden with a pond and small wildlife, and I have many fond memories of him sitting in his wheelchair cracking jokes and smiling even under the circumstances. Ty Olwen on top of providing first class care and support to not only the patients and families also made it feel homely to everyone. Grampy would often have a whisky and even the odd cigarette out in the garden in the sunshine and its tiny things like that that seemed to make the most difference. Not to mention his own TV and a day room with internet facilities, a large flat screen TV which he loved to watch the sport on, Jigsaws, collection of books/ music/ films and even accommodation for the families and relatives if they wished to stay overnight. Sadly my grampy passed away at 0130am on Easter Sunday (8th April 2012) but thanks to Ty Olwen he lived the last 6 weeks of his life in comfort with his family around him. You can support Chris on as he takes on the challenge of “Tough Mudder 2013”

Marathon Effort

Matthew Dainton has presented a cheque to Ty Olwen for £706, sponsorship received for running the London Marathon. When Gift Aid is added this will reach nearly £850 – a fantastic total. He was accompanied by his Grandfather when they visited Ty Olwen to meet with our President Mrs Margaret Bartlett to present the cheque. Matthew said that he wanted to do something for Ty Olwen in recognition of the care given to his grandmother 5 years ago.

Gowerton Comprehensive Supports Ty Olwen

Emily Rees, Holly Pitson and Emma Larmond, Year 8 pupils at Gowerton Comprehensive School are once again using their fundraising skills, this time for Ty Olwen. Last year Holly and her friends raised £500 for the Christian Lewis Trust from a fashion show. Holly lost her father Chris in Ty Olwen in March 2011 at the age of 53 and has decided, with the help of the school, to organise an event for Ty Olwen. This is being taken on by her year group who are holding an enterprise day on Thursday 4th July and stalls will include a Chocolate Fountain, Cakes, Jelly Beans, Fruit Smoothies and many others with all the proceeds going towards their efforts.  Later in the year there will be a ‘T’ Shirt and Poster Design Competition. Chairman of Ty Olwen Trust Mrs Helen Murray met with the girls at the school and said “The girls were so keen to get involved and I am sure their enthusiasm will pass on to all their friends.”

Jan & Jenks Pembs Coastal Path Walk

Jan and Jenks are walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path for Ty Olwen. This is what they say – Both Jenks and I have lost family members to cancer. Most of us have known someone with this condition. We’ve both raised funds for cancer charities before, but this time want to raise funds for Ty Olwen as they are supporting a dear friend. Walking 186 miles is a piece of cake compared to living with cancer. Follow their progress and donate on –http://www.justgiving.com/Jan-Lloyd2

Antonia’s Skydive

After a lot of hard work I’ve finally lost 4 stone which means I can do this parachute jump for charity! A lot of people have family members that have been cared for by staff at Ty Olwen or know someone who has been there! The work they do is outstanding and it’s not easy! Every penny raised will help them do the best they can everyday.

My grandfather Viv Matthews and grandmother Gaynor Matthews both spent time in Ty Olwen and I’m looking forward to raising money enabling them to help other people And also to thank them for all of their hard work!

I’m so scared of heights it’s unreal but doing this jump will just prove that anything is possible and positivity is the key to success!

So please dig deep and donate now!

Tough Mudder Event

Dear Tŷ Olwen

Team Unconquerable successfully completed the Tough Mudder event last weekend.  It was such a fun and amazing experience and we are very pleased that we are on course to eclipse our target of raising over £3,000 for Tŷ Olwen and Maggies.  Words cannot describe the feeling of being submerged in a pool of ice….and I can confirm that the 10,000 volt electric shocks were VERY REAL. Please find attached photographic evidence that all those who sponsored us definitely got their money’s worth!

The funds will be forwarded to Tŷ Olwen in the next few weeks from the Charities Trust.  I also have some cheques made out directly to Tŷ Olwen that I will pop in the post.  I hope the money will help Tŷ Olwen continue to provide the excellent services my family received.  I am interested to learn more about the Trust and if there are other ways we can help.

Team Unconquerable and I are planning our next event to raise more money so you’ll hear from me again in the near future.

Best regards

John Dunster
