James Thomas running the Henley Half Marathon

Story
I am running the Henley Half Marathon in Memory of my mother – Allison Thomas. She was sadly diagnosed with cancer in 2008 in her Breast, Nymph Glands and later went on to effect her vital organs and also her bones. After fighting the disease she lost her battle on the 3rd of July 2011, aged 45.
During the Spring of 2011 she endured a 6 hour operation in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. After the operation, she took residence in the Tŷ Olwen Hospice also situated in Morriston hospital. I cannot describe how helpful and supportive the staff at Tŷ Olwen were, to myself, my family and most of all to my mother during the few weeks she spent there. They gave us all great advice and psychological support during this peroid and couldn’t be more thankful.
I would also like to say a big thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Tŷ Olwen Hospice for making my mothers time there, that little more comfortable.
Tŷ Olwen has a strong financial commitment from the NHS to fund the day to day running of their services. However, it is necessary for the Tŷ Olwen Trust to raise additional funds to provide the level of care they feel their Patients and their Families deserve.

Gowerton RFC riding for Ty Olwen

The Team

Gowerton RFC raising money for Ty Olwen

We are cycling from Cwmbran to Gowerton on 1st September visting all the regional rugby stadiums on the way. The team currently consists of David Treharne, Robert Griffiths, Welsh international rugby player Huw Bennett, Ceri Bushnell,Julian Williams, Andrew Burgoyne and Steven Williams although we are hoping that more participants will commit to the ride. We are riding to raise funds for Ty Olwen because of the support they provide to cancer patients and their families in the Swansea area.

We are doing the ride because, last year, a member of Gowerton RFC who has two young sons playing for our junior section passed away due to cancer. The gentleman’s name was Tony Jones. I don’t think Tony had even reached the age of 40. He left a wife and two boys aged 13 & 11. The family were originally from Cwmbran but moved to Gowerton a number of years ago due to Tony’s work with Network Rail. We felt it would be an opportunity to commemorate Tony and raise funds for a worthy cause. It was Tony’s wife, Claire, that nominated Ty Olwen as the beneficiary.

Thank you to SPADS!

Thank you to Sketty Players Amateur Dramatic Society who are linked to the Parish of Sketty and since it’s formation some twenty years ago have supported local charities with profits from their productions. They have presented a cheque for £400 ‘to assist in the valuable work of the Ty Olwen Trust’, money raised by their recent production of the murder mystery play, Sudden Death at Thornbury Manor, performed, with supper in July. Ty Olwen was nominated  this time by the youngest member of the group in recognition of the way it supported her grandfather and family recently ‘as, indeed, it has helped other members and their families.’
