Paula Thomas & Noakes Bakery, Pontardulais
Paula Thomas of Llangennech experienced Ty Olwen first hand last year and decided to raise money for Ty Olwen. Last Christmas she gave a donation to Ty Olwen instead of sending cards and also has been selling unwanted items on ebay. She then asked her employers if they would join in and Noakes bakery in Pontardulais are now one of the increasing number of local shops with Ty Olwen Collecting Boxes supporting their local charity. Paula recently visited the Vice Chairman to hand over the first full collecting box which contained over £53 and also handed over a personal donation of £60. Thank you Paula and to Noakes Bakery and their customers.
In Memory of Clare Ellis
Llanrhidian holiday park in Gower has helped raise £8,200 for Ty Olwen in memory of Clare Ellis. The park was approached to fundraise for the hospice by her husband Billy who lost his wife to cancer two years ago. Billy explained to Kate Murray, Ty Olwen Young Ambassador, that his wife had gone into the hospice on three occasions during her illness and the nurses had not only been wonderful to his wife but also to him and his family. He couldn’t thank them enough for what they had done.
Park manager Mitzy Richards said “Ty Olwen looked after Clare, and I visited her there. They cared for her so well that Billy wanted to give something back and he has been the driving force behind this. They do such a good job and it is a local charity and local people should support local charities”.
The holiday park raised the funds with a Baggy Trousers Evening, its annual carnival, numerous raffles and other events. The park is hoping to raise even more money for Ty Olwen with a record breaking event in August. Organisers are hoping to enter the Guiness record book by holding the biggest head-shaving event. It will need 400 people to loose their hair with each person paying £5 to the charity. If you would like to get involved you can contact the park on 01792 391083.
Rotary Club of Mumbles
The Rotary Club of Mumbles recently celebrated V.E. day with a Red, White and Blue themed evening at the Langland Bay Golf Club. Club President Doug Camp welcomed District 1150 Governor Sandra Townsend, Liz and Tony Lovell, Captains of the Golf Club, and Helen and Paul Murray of the Ty Olwen Trust. Over 90 people attended the evening and enjoyed a splendid meal (without Spam) and were entertained by Jonathan Lycett who sang songs from the war years. Nearly £1000 was raised during the evening for Ty Olwen
New Patient Chairs at Ty Olwen
Thanks to the generosity of various individuals and groups we were pleased to take delivery this morning of a further four specialist electric recliner chairs which cost in total over £5000. The Chairman of the Ty Olwen Trust, Mrs Helen Murray, is seen trying out one of the chairs whilst Staff Nurse Karren Roberts and 2nd Year Student Nurse Tara Littler look on. (The fourth chair was already in use when the picture was taken!)
Sad Day for St. Jude’s Church, Mt Pleasant
A letter from the Treasurer of St. Jude’s Church.
Sadly, on 8th February St. Jude’s Church conducted it’s final service. In August of this year we were due to celebrate the centenary of the witness at the Church, but this was not to be. An enormous amount of money was required to refurbish the property; there was no real prospect of being able to achieve this and the P.C.C. consequently took the painful decision to close the Church.
Despite being unable to maintain the property the parishioners there regularly collected for good causes and strived to support local organisations. It was their wish that the money collected in our Lent appeal should go to a good cause. A cheque for £475-70 in support of the invaluable work you do is enclosed.
Thank you from everybody at Ty Olwen, your support is so greatly appreciated.
