“Comfort bags” by Karren
This Mothers Day Student Nurse Jessica Daniels, on placement in Ty Olwen, donated to her mentors “comfort project” instead of sending flowers for her mother and grandmother.
Karren Roberts was overwhelmed by her generous donations and said
“They are a bag for children to remember. When we care in their time of need they can be used as an activity bag and then can also be used as a memory bag.
It will contain forget me not seeds and sunflower seeds also blank jigsaws and felt tips. The jigsaws can be used as an aid to right down memories. Jotters for drawing and journals for recording thoughts and feelings. A balloon and luggage label so they can write a message and bereavement books from local agencies. Also any kind of distraction such as colour therapy books and gifts.
The activity bags can have anything in them to help distract and occupy children who are at the beside bed of a loved one”
Catwg Hand Bell Ringers
Ty Olwen Trustee and Unit Receptionist Delyth Gough was delighted to welcome the St. Catwg Handbell Ringers to Ty Olwen to receive a £300 donation, the proceeds of their fundraising at the Main Reception over Christmas.

Helping Hands Knitting Group
Thank you to the Helping Hands Knitting Group for presenting to Ty Olwen a large collection of knitted blankets for our patients. Helping to bring some home comforts to them. Val Berni visited Ty Olwen and met with Staff Nurses Lynda and Karren and Chairman Helen to hand them over recently.
The Sheila Mary Cup
Delighted to welcome Helen and Ian Williams to Ty Olwen when they presented a cheque to Sister Lisa and Staff Nurse Coral.
Every year they run a charity football match called the ‘Sheila Mary Cup’ after her mum who passed away from cancer, and “who was looked after incredibly well by you guys.”
On the day they raised £1100 which was match funded meaning Ty Olwen and another charity Papworth Hospital received £1100 each.
Sad Day for Ty Olwen
Friends and colleagues gathered at Ty Olwen recently to say farewell to Staff Nurse Lynda Hopkins. Lynda has been a fixture at Ty Olwen since it’s opening in 1981 and epitomises the superb quality of our staff constantly showing care, love and compassion for our patients, their families and friends. Lynda has been a driving force behind the growth of Ty Olwen and an advocate for all Ty Olwen and palliative care stands for.
Morriston Orpheus Continued Support
Choir in Ty Olwen Fundraiser
On Wednesday 21 February representatives of the Choir were delighted to present a cheque for £350 to the Ty Olwen Trust in support of the Morriston based hospice.
This sum was raised from ticket sales of an informal concert at The Hyst Bar on High Street, Swansea on 13 December 2017. The Choir had sung carols at Ty Olwen earlier in the evening, an annual tradition going back many years, before setting-off for the fundraiser at The Hyst.
Mince pies and other baked delights helped to attract a festive crowd to the Hyst to hear Christmas songs and other numbers from the Choir’s repertoire. Meanwhile, thousands of people watched on Facebook in all corners of the globe and offered their comments and requests.
Mal Pope of The Hyst was happy to hand over his establishment to such a good cause and to provide the technology for the live streaming.
David Taylor, Chairman of Morriston Orpheus Choir said: “the Choir has a long association with Ty Olwen and this year wanted to do a little more than the regular Christmas carol performance at the hospice. We are so happy that we were able to raise some money to support the wonderful work of the staff and volunteers there”.
