Concert Backing for Ty Olwen

The close relationship between the Morriston Orpheus Choir and the Ty Olwen Palliative Care Unit at Morriston Hospital was again highlighted with a recent presentation to the Ty Olwen Trust.

The Choir chose the Ty Olwen Trust as the main recipient of the proceeds of its Summer concert held to commemorate its Founder Conductor, Ivor Sims, who died 50 years ago this year. The concert was held at St David’s Church in Morriston.
Accepting a cheque for £600 on behalf of the Ty Olwen Trust its President, Margaret Bartletthighlighted the significant amount, of over £260,000 per annum, which the Trust needed to raise for Ty Olwen.
She added
“We are very grateful to the Morriston Orpheus Choir for its long standing support for Ty Olwen. Our thanks also go to all who supported the concert at St David’s Church.”
Choir Chairman Terry Bennett, pictured with Mrs Bartlett congratulated the Trust on the excellent work it does in raising funds for the Unit.
He said: “The amount of money that is raised by the Trust each year is staggering and it is particularly noteworthy that its admin. costs are kept to an absolute minimum with some 97p in every pound raised going directly to patient care. Many of our Choristers past and present, will know of individuals who have benefited from the care provided by Ty Olwen and we are delighted to be able to support them in this way”
The Choir visits Ty Olwen just before Christmas each year to entertain the patients, staff and visitors and its links with Ty Olwen stretch back before the Unit’s opening in 1981. The Choir’s then President Mrs Olwen Morgan chaired the fundraising committee which helped set up the Unit. Mrs Morgan subsequently chaired the Ty Olwen Trust and the Unit was named after her in recognition of the contribution she made to its establishment.

Jonathan Mainwaring, a soloist at the concert, also donated his fee, to the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff in support of which he will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro next year. We wish him well.
