Tonmawr 10’s Rugby Tournament

The second annual Rugby Tens Tournament at Tonmawr Rugby Club was held recently and Ty Olwen was chosen as this years charity.  In September 2016 Ty Olwen was privileged to care for Shirley Howard, wife of Peter, mother of Shelly Pugh, Gran of Isabelle and Millie and mother-in-law of Tonmawr 1st team coach Ross Pugh.

The Chairman was delighted to meet the family and supporters at Tonmawr Rugby Club to receive a donation of £4,053.56p and to hear first hand from Peter and his family how much they appreciated the care that was given to Shirley and them by the staff at Ty Olwen.  “Ty Olwen is a special and wonderful place with fantastic staff who were so kind and we decided to raise money so that the work they do can be there for others”.

Cerys Bowen

12 year old Cerys Bowen visited Ty Olwen last week to present a donation to us in memory of her Grandmother, Mrs Susan Bowen.

Cerys did a project in her school in Switzerland to raise awareness of Breast Cancer.  She designed, made and sold key rings and had to give a presentation to the parents of her fellow pupils.  No mean feat for anyone.

Cerys explained that she chose to put words on the key ring –

Hope – you hope for the person

Love – your love just grows stronger

Laughter – making my Gran laugh made memories

Cerys is pictured with her Dad, Rhodri, presenting £444.00 to Dr Gwen Davies, Consultant in Palliative Medicine and Miss Delyth Gough, Unit Receptionist and Ty Olwen Trustee.

Local Group support is wonderful

A group of Ladies who meet regularly chose to support Ty Olwen this year as their charity.  The Chairman attended a meeting earlier in the year to tell them about the work of Ty Olwen and the role of the Trust in supporting the work.  The Ladies held a fundraising afternoon and raffles and presented a cheque for £900 at their June meeting.  The Chairman was delighted to be able to return to meet the ladies and thank them for all their support in raising such an incredible amount.

Ty Olwen to benefit from Mayor’s Charity

The new Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Janice Dudley, has announced her official charities for the year and spoken about why they are close to her heart. Councillor Dudley will use her term in office to raise money for the Salvation Army and Tŷ Olwen.

Councillor Dudley said:

“It is a great honour to be made Mayor of Neath Port Talbot. For me, some of the highlights of the year will be the privilege of meeting people and organisations that support our communities to find out about the invaluable work they do, and the chance to raise awareness of and money for important charities.

“There are so many worthwhile charities, that I had to think long and hard about which ones to support.

“2017 marks the twentieth year since my dear husband passed away. I chose to support Tŷ Olwen in his memory and as a way of thanking them for the wonderful care and support he received.

Mrs Helen Murray MBE, Chairman of the Tŷ Olwen Trust said:

“Everyone at Tŷ Olwen is delighted that we are one of the Mayor’s chosen charities this year. We are a local charity where at least 98p in every pound donated goes to the care of our patients and to allow them to have the best possible support we can offer. Any money raised by the Mayor’s Charity will make a huge difference to so many people.”

The Mayor carries out hundreds of civic duties during the year, most of which are within Neath, Port Talbot, Pontardawe and the Valleys. They also chair meetings of the full Council and attend annual events such as the opening of Neath Fair, Remembrance Day events and the Civic Church Service.
